Union welcomes new standard for teachers

SIBU: Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) supports the Teacher Professionalism Standard to be implemented next year to enable teachers to better focus on imparting knowledge to students.

Its president William Ghani Bina said yesterday teachers need no longer worry about being bogged down by non-related teaching responsibilities.

The key responsibility of teachers would be to mould the minds of students, and churn out quality human capital required by the nation, given the country’s target of becoming an industrialised nation by 2020.

“I don’t think it is productive for teachers to be involved in administrative duties or other non-teaching related assignments,” he commented when asked his view on the Education Ministry’s move to introduce the Teacher Professionalism Standard next year to beef up the education system, and equip teachers in line with the New Economic Model.

National news agency Bernama quoted Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong as saying the standard would be based on trainee teacher selection, pre-service training, teacher placement, professional induction and continuous professional development.

Dr Wee said the teacher training curriculum would be enhanced to incorporate aspects of innovation, creativity, enterpreneurship, resilience and competitiveness.

Ghani pointed out that education was a core element in the Government Transformation Programme (GTP), hence had to move in tandem with change.

“Education is an agent of change. With quality human capital, our country will be able to compete with others at the highest level.

“And it is education that will help uplift the standard of living of the people, allowing them to enjoy a better quality of life,” Ghani said.
