Get more rural school leavers into teachers training institutes – STU chief
KUCHING: The Education Ministry should give opportunities to more rural school leavers who are qualified to take up a teaching course to overcome teachers’ exchange-cycle problems at primary schools, especially in the rural areas.
ENGAGE LOCAL TEACHERS: Ghani proposes ministry train rural school leavers as teachers.
This is because trainee teachers from the peninsular who are posted to rural primary schools here usually go back to their hometown after two or three years in service, said Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president William Ghani Bina.
This, he pointed out, had led to many vacancies which needed to be filled by new teachers.
“This cycle is causing rural area students to be left out and lag behind in their studies.
“STU has proposed to the ministry to take in more rural school leavers for the Teachers’ Training Institutes so that they can serve at their own hometown upon completion of training.
“Therefore, we hope that it can be implemented as it will improve the quality of education in the rural areas,” said William when contacted yesterday.
According to him, this move would also help reduce cost in terms of manpower.
“It is not that we don’t like teachers from the Peninsular, but we pity them as they have to sacrifice themselves by serving in the rural areas (in our state).
“By having more local teachers, there will not be much problem for them to get familiarised with the surroundings,” he said.
He said it would be of great benefit if the teachers come from the same longhouse or area as the students.
“When more teachers are from rural areas, it will encourage the new generation to place more emphasis on the importance of education.
“Employing teachers who originate from rural areas in the state will also be welcomed by the longhouse dwellers,” he said
