Headmasters council supports abolishment of UPSR
KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Malaysian Headmasters Council (GMGBM) has welcomed the proposal to abolish the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination, said Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zakarshi. He said the council felt it was best to juts have one public examination, as only the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) held value for employment and application for university entrance.
“The UPSR and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) exams have no value upon finishing school.
This is why the GMGBM agrees for the UPSR to be replaced by a school based assessment,” he told a news conference after presenting diplomas and certificates at Kolej Teknologi Yayasan Pendidikan Cheras YPC-ITWEB 6th convocation here yesterday.
The ministry was awaiting reactions on the issue from various quarters before making any final decision on the matter, said Puad, adding that the government also intended to give more prominence to the Malaysian Skills Certificate as well.
He said the certificate would be given to those who are already working without needing to study, but rather based on their experience.
“Those who are working can also get this certificate … if he works at a car and motorcycle workshop, his five years experience there can be evaluated for the certificate although he did not attend classes,” he said.
Dr Puad said the certification for this would be handled by the Skills Development Department under the Human Resource Ministry.
At the ceremony, 161 graduates received diplomas in business and information technology while 46 others received certificates for foundation in business and information technology. — Bernama
